Introduction
On a first trip to Nantou, the most common mistake is putting Cingjing Farm and Xitou on the same day, which turns into two and a half hours on mountain roads. Nantou’s attractions actually fall into three clusters: Cingjing Farm and Hehuanshan are up in the mountains, Sun Moon Lake and the Formosan Aboriginal Culture Village are around Yuchi, and Xitou and the Yokai Village are in Lugu. Stay within the same cluster for the day. Of the ten attractions, four don’t require tickets; the most expensive is the Formosan Aboriginal Culture Village at NT$980, but it includes two cable cars, so it can be a good value if you’re bringing kids. This article compares 10 attractions in Nantou. To escape the summer heat with kids, choose Cingjing Farm; for one ticket that covers everything including the gondola, choose the Formosan Aboriginal Culture Village; on a rainy day, go to Babbuza Dreamfactory. If you want to see a Hehuanshan sunrise, stay in Cingjing Farm; the row of European-style guesthouses beside the farm—like Florence Villa—open onto the mountains when you step outside.
About the Editor
Where to Stay and How to Plan Attractions
To see the sunrise on Hehuanshan, stay up in the mountains
It takes about 50 minutes to drive from Cingjing Farm to Wuling. If you want the Hehuanshan sunrise, stay in Cingjing Farm and set out around 4:00 a.m.; if you don’t stay up on the mountain, it’s 40 minutes up from Puli and another 50 minutes to reach Wuling, so one day only covers Cingjing Grasslands and Wuling. Most guesthouses in Cingjing are around the farm; European-style castles like Florence Villa are on the farm road, and rooms look out over valleys and sea of clouds. This area is high in elevation: summers are 18–21°C and it can snow in winter, so pack as if you’re a season colder than the plains.
Sun Moon Lake, the Formosan Aboriginal Culture Village, and Puli can be done in one day
Puli is 25 minutes from Sun Moon Lake, and the cable car from Sun Moon Lake takes you directly to the Formosan Aboriginal Culture Village. Cona’s Chocolate Castle and Lugao Coffee Manor are along that road. This area sits at 450–750 meters elevation and is easy to walk year-round, so it’s the least worrisome for elders or kids; the Formosan Aboriginal Culture Village requires a full day, and the other three attractions take about half a day each.
Xitou and the Yokai Village are too far from Cingjing to do in one day
Xitou is in Lugu; it’s about 1 hour 20 minutes by car from Sun Moon Lake and two and a half hours from Cingjing, so forcing them into the same day means you’ll spend the whole day in the car. Xitou plus the Yokai Village is a full day, and staying inside the park at hotels like Hotel Royal Chihpen in Xitou or Ming Shan Forest Villa next to the Yokai Village means you can see the bamboo forest in the quiet early morning, which is when Xitou looks its best. Treat the Cingjing–Hehuanshan, Sun Moon Lake–Formosan Aboriginal Culture Village, and Xitou–Yokai Village clusters as separate full days and don’t mix them.
Elevation determines what month you should visit and what clothes to bring
These ten attractions span a wide range of elevations: Wuling 3,275 m, Cingjing Farm 1,750 m, Xitou 1,150 m, Sun Moon Lake 748 m, Puli 450 m. Temperature drops about 0.6°C per 100 m of elevation gain, so Wuling is nearly 17°C colder than Puli. Wear long sleeves when going up in summer and bring a down jacket in winter. Seasonal notes: Hehuanshan’s snow season is December to February; alpine rhododendrons bloom May to June; Formosan Aboriginal Culture Village’s cherry blossoms are late January to March; Xitou and Huisun have fireflies April to May, Xitou’s ginkgo turns in November. Cingjing and Sun Moon Lake are visitable year-round.

Three Nantou Routes and Accommodation Suggestions
Two-day, one-night Cingjing + Hehuan Mountain trip, staying in Cingjing
Arrive in Puli before noon on the first day to eat and resupply, then drive 40 minutes up to Cingjing. First visit Cingjing Ranch to watch the 15:45 equestrian show (on weekends and during summer/winter school holidays there is a 14:30 sheep show), then stroll through the Small Swiss Garden or the Skywalk. In the evening check into your guesthouse. Most Cingjing guesthouses are along the Farm Road; Florance Villa consists of three European-style castle buildings and includes room and two meals, so you can watch the sea of clouds from your room at night without driving. Set off at 4:00 a.m. the next morning to Wuling to watch the sunrise, and on the way do the Shimen Mountain round-trip hike (40 minutes). Descend before 10:00 and return to Puli; spend the afternoon at Cona’s Chocolate Castle for the kids’ DIY activities, then head home. Cona’s DIY requires online reservation in advance; if you want to stay at Songxue Lodge to watch the sunrise, book a month before the snow season.
Sun Moon Lake plus Formosan Aboriginal Culture Village over two days, stay near Shuishe or Yuchi
You can’t finish this route in a single day; the Culture Village needs a full day. On day one, rent bikes at the Xiangshan Visitor Center and ride to Shuishe Pier, take a boat to Ita Thao for lunch, then drive to Lugao Coffee Manor for an afternoon coffee with a view. Stay near Shuishe Pier so dinner is within walking distance. On day two, take the Sun Moon Lake cable car from Ita Thao up to the Formosan Aboriginal Culture Village and play until closing, then take the cable car back to retrieve your car.
Xitou plus Monster Village over one night, stay next to the park
From April to September you can enter Xitou after 15:00 with a starlight ticket for NT$130. Start with University Pond and the sky corridor, exit the park before dark and walk to Monster Village for dinner on the shopping street—the illuminated village is more photogenic than daytime. Stay at Howard Resort Xitou in the park or Ming Shan Forest Hotel next to Monster Village; re-enter the park at 07:00 the next morning when the bamboo grove is empty. Nighttime firefly tours in April and May require advance booking. Return via Zhushan to connect to National Freeway No.3, which is closer than returning via Puli.
Specs, Pitfalls, and Who It’s Best For
- Specs comparison: Ten attractions range from 450 to 3,275 meters elevation. Four are free (Sun Moon Lake, Hehuanshan, Lugaocafe, and the Monster Village). Paid tickets run NT$200–280 each; only Formosan Aboriginal Culture Village is NT$980 but includes two cable cars and full access. Xitou and Huisun have electric shuttle carts or water-crossing trails, so bringing seniors and kids is easier there.
- Best for: For kids choose Cingjing Farm to see sheep, Formosan Aboriginal Culture Village for rides, Huisun Forest for water trails, and Shude’s indoor play at the half-mountain DreamWorks; for seniors choose Sun Moon Lake for boat rides or Xitou for the electric park cart; for photos pick Hehuanshan for snow and night skies or Monster Village for evening lights; if you just want to relax and have a drink pick Lugaocafe.
- Common pitfalls: Trying to do Cingjing and Xitou in one day requires two and a half hours of driving and is tight; during snow season you need snow chains for Hehuanshan or you can’t get up, and children under 6 may be at risk of altitude sickness above 3,000 meters; Xitou parking often fills on holidays—park outside and take the shuttle; Monster Village can be seen in about an hour, so don’t plan a special trip just for it; Formosan Aboriginal Culture Village often rains in the afternoon—enter early.

Conclusion
Nantou’s attractions fall broadly into three areas, Cingjing and Hehuanshan, Sun Moon Lake and the Formosan Aboriginal Culture Village, and Xitou and the Yokai Village, and the drives between them are long, so staying in one area per day keeps you off the mountain roads. Also watch the season, since the snow, cherry blossoms and fireflies each have their own months; the same place can look completely different depending on when you go. To plan further, look at the opening hours and ticket information published by Cingjing Farm, Formosan Aboriginal Culture Village and Xitou Nature Education Area, then decide which area to stay in.
